Travel With Kefi: A Guide to Naxos

Naxos is often overlooked by tourists for it’s Cycladic siblings. People tend to flock to Mykonos for its nightlife, or Santorini for its sweeping views — but Naxos has more to offer than meets the eye.  The largest of the Cycladic islands, Naxos is located in the Aegean Sea and next to the island of Paros. It is known for having some of the most beautiful beaches of all the Greek Islands, many of which are easily accessible. It is the most fertile of the Cycladic islands, and has a varied geography — from beaches to forests to mountains. In ancient times, it was known for being one of the cult centers of the ancient greek god Dionysus, the god of wine, whose temple is located on the island.  Naxos is perfect for those wanting a laid back island while also offering a variety of things to do.

Logistics: Naxos is a 4 hour ferry ride from the port city of Piraeus, depending on the speed of the ferry taken.  Blue Star Ferries offers tickets that you can buy in advance.  Naxos also has a small airport, with daily flights to and from Athens main airport. Once there, car rentals are available. If you choose not to rent a car, buses connect the island and run on a regular schedule.

Stay:

  • Hotel Grotta. Located just outside of the main town, Hotel Grotta is located up on a hill overlooking Apollo’s gate, also known as the Portara. Nicoletta, the owner, is wonderful and will make you instantly feel at home.  The rooms are simple, but incredibly clean. Each comes with its own terrace which overlooks the sea. Breakfast every morning is included and is nothing short of amazing -- any Greek breakfast dish you could want is served, along with cheeses, fresh fruits, and coffee.  Ask to try Nicoletta’s family wine.

Eat

  • O Vasilis in Melanes. A local taverna tucked away in the quaint little village of Melanes, this place is not to be missed for its delicious traditional dishes. You’ll need a car or a taxi to get there, but it is worth the trek.

  • Yasouvlaki! In Chora. Located on the waterfront, this is the place to go for a delicious, quick souvlaki.

  • Waffle House in Chora. Not the same as Waffle House in the United States. A great place to get some fun dessert and people watch.

Drink:

  • Vallindras Kitron Distillery, Chalki. Naxos is famous for the citron liqueur, made from the fruit and leaves of the citron tree.  It has a slightly similar taste to lemon, and comes in three varieties, depending on the content of alcohol it contains. Vallindras Kitron Distillery is the original distillery in Naxos.

Swim

  • Agios Prokopios. Although Naxos is full of beautiful beaches, Agios Prokopios is one of the best.  Because of its location, it is sheltered from the ‘meltemi’ -- the summer winds of the cyclades islands.  It’s a good mix of developed (so there are lounge chairs and umbrellas for rent), but also not too crowded.

  • Agia Anna. Another beautiful beach with crystal clear waters, although much more developed and crowded. Get there early to reserve a beach chair.
