A Quick Stopover in Serifos

On our most recent trip to Greece, we decided to check out Serifos for a few days before continuing on to Milos. We had heard such wonderful things about Serifos, and so we blocked off two nights of our island adventures to check it out.

Unfortunately, the weather was pretty awful the days that we were there. Serifos is known to be a windy island (like many of the Cyclades) but this was something else. We are talking 30-50 mph winds the entire time, with no breaks. My ears were pretty much ringing every time I would get inside. It was so windy, in fact, the one full day that we were there, no ferries came in or out of the island. And the one day that they did come in, someone’s suitcase blew into the water! So - unfortunately, I didn’t come away loving Serifos as much as I had hoped. We didn’t get a chance to venture to Chora, which I hear is so wonderful, because we were told it would be even more windy up there. That being said, we still had nice experiences, and we would definitely give the island another chance! Instead of doing a comprehensive review, this will be an abbreviated guide to the thinks we liked.

Stay:

We stayed at Amfrititi Studios and it was a delight. The rooms are clean, and true to the traditional Cycladic architecture. We had a small balcony that overlooked Livadi port, and the views were breathtaking. It’s a short walk to the main beach and restaurants. The hotel is family owned and the owners are very kind and thoughtful. A small breakfast is included with your room, with homemade pitas and jams. Small artistic pieces made by the owner herself add charm to the hotel, and it’s reasonably priced.

My friend Kristina, who is more of a Serifos expert, has stayed at The Captain’s House and has nothing but wonderful things to say about it.

While doing our research, we really considered splurging and staying at the Coco-mat resort, but ultimately decided not to, mostly because its location is a little more secluded. It looks like a dream though, and we would consider in the future!

Eat:

Axinos Serifos (Livadi): We ate here on our first night and it was delicious! This was definitely one of our pricier meals on vacation, but that was largely because we got a fresh grilled fish.

Polyphemus (Livadi): This is the place for gyros, souvlaki, etc. Great meats, great service, and a fun atmosphere. We went here for lunch and it was a huge hit.

Swim:

Okay okay, so because of the weather I did not swim at all. It was very sad. But, Paralia Livadi is right by our hotel and had some lovely looking waters. This would probably have been our #1 because sometimes with a toddler, you’re just trying get somewhere easy and this was right by our hotel. There are a few umbrellas and a restaurant that was highly recommended.

All in all, I have to admit our trip to Serifos was a bit disappointing — but not because of the island itself! Between the bad weather and having such a short amount of time there, it was hard to get a good idea of the island. However, I would definitely go back to check Serifos out again!
